Make it a DIY Holiday
|Working at a publishing company definitely has its perks. And a craft publishing company to boot–well, that’s just icing on the cake! So when I happened to spot the new DIY Holiday magazine on the counter of the reception area in my office building, I quickly snatched a copy and began tagging all of the tings I’d like to make before Christmas rolls around. These projects all look totally doable, from the crocheted holiday garland that graces the cover, to the sewn envelope clutch. However, when it comes to making anything besides jewelry, I’m definitely considered a novice. So I decided to start with these adorable book sculpture ornaments. I’ve never done much with papercrafting, but I’m handy with a craft knife and the paper art I’ve seen in magazines, on blogs, and on Pinterest has always fascinated me!
While this certainly wasn’t as quick of a project as I’d expected–it took quite awhile to cut through all those book pages and then carefully fold each one–I was quite pleased that my finished piece looked very much like the one in the photo!

The finished piece!
This took awhile, but I told you I was handy with a craft knife!
Still folding away. But you can see it starting to take shape!
Isn’t this cool?
|Now I’m excited to try miniature versions–wouldn’t a dozen tiny ornaments be cute, strung together like a garland? I bet glossy magazines would be fun to use. And I think using foil-type wrapping paper would be gorgeous! Even a brown paper bag would look neat. I guess the successful use of alternate papers would just be a matter of creating a “spine” by hot gluing along one edge of the papers. Time to experiment!
