Learn Peyote Stitch in a Private Lesson with Melinda Barta
I’ve known several beaders who learned peyote stitch from Melinda Barta’s Peyote Stitch: Basics and Beyond DVD, so when I heard she filmed 2 new video workshops on peyote stitch, I had to find out what inspired her to return to the studio.
BD: Melinda, you are prolific in your design, writing, and video work. How did you find inspiration for yet more tips and techniques and enough to create 2 new video workshops?
MB: The first peyote DVD you mentioned was filmed just a little over 5 years ago. Since then, I’ve come across many peyote stitch tips, techniques, and variations, and was happy to put them together in the new video workshop, Peyote Stitch Companion: Basics.
My other new workshop, Peyote Stitch Companion: Bezels, Shapes & More, is an intermediate lesson on tubular peyote stitch.
I’d have to say, this one was more of a personal exploration, maybe influenced by some of the editing work I do for Beadwork magazine. It was really fun to play around with this easy peyote variation and see some of the sculptural and dimensional beadwork you can create. I can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with once they start playing around with this stitch.
BD: Have you had any feedback from readers or viewers that has led you in one way or the other?
MB: A lot of prep work goes into teaching and filming, and hearing from viewers inspires me to keep going. This is one comment I received about my first peyote DVD:
“I personally thank you every time I start a peyote project for great instructions in the DVD from Interweave! I no longer dread the beginning of the peyote and no longer have any problems with it. And I owe that to you. Thank you!!! –S. Anderson”
I love teaching and feedback like this makes me truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to share my passion for beading.
BD: Both of your video workshops teach techniques – please tell us more about the design you created and kitted just for the release of your videos.
MB: I try to develop at least one kit for each new book or video, as so many people have reach out, just wishing they had access to some of the designs and the beads they see while I’m on camera. To help support this idea and the new The Peyote Stitch Companion: Basics video which includes a 7-minute bonus video on diagonal peyote stitch, I put together the Sawtooth Bead Cuff Kit in two colorways. The design is reversible and so far, the feedback has been great.
BD: I can see why people are loving this! Who doesn’t like it when one design can be worn with two different outfits? Melinda, thank you for taking the time to talk with us today and for all you do to inspire and help us be better at stitching our beads!
