Jewelry Business: This Holiday Season, Think Outside the Shops
I can hardly believe it, but we're already counting down to the holidays around here. Every time I drive down Main Street in Lake Placid, I see signs announcing the dates of their special holiday events for the merchants downtown! And while it's hard not to be a little distressed by the appearance of holiday decorations and merchandise in the grocery store, for those of us who run a jewelry business, this is the perfect time to start planning a couple of special holiday sales events.
It's great that we can sell our handmade beaded jewelry online through venues like Etsy, ArtFire, BigCartel, and others, giving your customers the opportunity to actually touch your handmade jewelry is priceless when it comes to increasing sales. But if you're tired of the typical holiday craft show venues, why not try a home party or open studio event this holiday season? Having a home party this holiday season is a fun, relaxed way to enjoy some quality time with friends and make some holiday jewelry sales at the same time.
Need a couple of ideas to make your next holiday jewelry party outstanding? Here are 3 ideas that I started thinking "outside the shops" for my holiday jewelry sales:
Demonstration and Participation. Bring a couple of works-in-progress to show potential customers all that goes in to creating your finished beaded jewelry. Whether you do bead-weaving, stringing, wire jewelry, or even polymer clay, demonstrating to your customers the process of creating a finished piece of jewelry may give them a greater appreciation of how these pieces are created. Or, as an alternative, why not host a jewelry-making holiday party where guests can learn how to make easy earrings, bracelets, and necklaces of their own design?
Hostess gifts. If you're having a home party hosted by someone else, offer them a few pieces of your jewelery as a thank you gift, or offer them a significant discount on any purchases they make. Another way to encourage sales is to offer your hostess a percentage of every sale made by others as a credit towards purchases of her own at the end of the show. Make sure your hostess knows that she's appreciated!
Collaborate. Chances are, if you're a beader, you're probably part of a larger group of creative and crafty friends. Why not put your collective creativity to use and host a collaborative holiday jewelry party? Don't limit yourselves to just jewelry, either — include fiber artists, friends who make handmade accessories like handbags and hats, and maybe even friends who make two-dimensional art or functional art like ceramics. Having a small gathering of artists who specialize in different mediums is almost like having a high-end craft show, in the comfort of someone's home!
