Glass Beads I Love: New Czech Gumdrop Beads from York Beads
Are you ready for a sweet glass bead treat? York Beads in New York City has a new shape of Czech pressed glass bead ready for us — the gumdrop! I got a sneak peek of these little lovelies last week, and now York Beads is ready to show them to the world — and you're seeing it here on Beading Daily before anyone else!
If you're a fan of the Czech glass spike beads that been showing up in bead shops everywhere, you'll love this new shape of glass beads. Instead of a pointy end like the spikes, the tops of these beads have been rounded, tumbled, and polished to resemble a gumdrop.
Gumdrop glass beads will be available in approximately fourteen colors, including silver bullet (pictured), magic raspberry, and clear. The coatings of these beads are liquid metals that are dripped onto the clear base beads and then dried in a special chamber. The beautiful nickel silver metallic coating on the silver bullet gumdrop beads is actually applied in the same way that metal beads and glass seed beads are plated.
As with the spike beads, these Czech glass beads must be removed from their molds by hand to prevent breakage, unlike other types of glass beads that can be mechanically removed from their molds.
If you want to see these great new Czech glass gumdrop beads in person, you can find them at Bead Fest Philadelphia, August 17-19, 2012, in booth 204.
