Right-Angle Weave Earring Jacket Instructions
Kassie’s earring jackets were inspired by retro fashions. She says, “I remember wearing earring jackets. You know, those bright interchangeable circles or flowers that you wore with studs? Well, recently I was playing around with SuperDuos and came up with a cute little motif that works perfectly as an earring jacket. The part I like best is I can easily make a handful of them and, using the studs I already have, wind up with dozens of new pairs of earrings!”

In the diagrams, the darker beads represent new beads being added during that step. Lighter beads represent beads that have been added in previous steps. The dot on each thread path will be shown on the bead the thread is exiting at the beginning of that step.

1
On 2′ of thread, string 4B. Pass through all four beads plus the first one again. Pull on the tail and working thread to tighten the beads. Leave a 3″ tail that you can weave into the beadwork at the end.

2
Pick up 1A and pass through the next B in the center round. Repeat 3 times. Pass through the first A picked up.

3
Pick up 2A and 1C. Pass through the next A from the center round. Repeat three times. Pass through the first 2A picked up to step up to the next round.

4
Pick up 3A and pass through the 2nd hole of the C. Pick up 1D and pass through the outermost A of the next stack in the round. Next, repeat this entire step three more times, but on the last time, pass through the 4th A down from the end, finally pulling the thread tight.

5
Weave-in your working and tail threads, tying a few half-hitch knots as needed, and trim any excess thread.

Tips and Customization For Your Earring Jackets
✓
Wear your earring jacket by inserting a stud through the center of the bead weaving.
✓
Use a tight tension and retrace the thread path from Step 4 if necessary to strengthen the beadwork.
✓
If you don’t like the open hole that shows on the end of the SuperDuos, consider using SuperUnos.
✓
To make a regular pair of dangly earrings, add a loop of seed beads on one corner and attach an ear wire with a jump ring.

I have never heard of earring jackets, I guess they were a well kept little secret here in the UK. I’m guessing you just get an existing stud and push it through the jacket before putting in your ear so you can just change the jacket using the same studs for a different look? I’m new to beading and haven’t used duo beads so do not own any. Does it have to be duo beads or can it be any elongated bead? Sorry for the long post but I wasn’t to know everything Thank you so much for these Beautiful free tutorials, you are very generous.
I’ve used other two hole beads in this project such as mini gemduos and kites. You can find the free tutorial (it’s called Vortices now) on the tips and freebies page of my website http://www.beadingbutterfly.com
