Fall Beaded Jewelry Inspiration from Beadwork Inspired by Color

Petite Couronne Pendant beading pattern by Alice Coelho
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

The vibrant tapestry of autumn is such an inspiring color palette! Here’s a sneak peek at five fall beaded jewelry projects from Beadwork Inspired by Color (available now in print and eBook editions) that will ignite your jewelry making this season. Each pattern is available individually or in the book.

As you weave fall hues into your beadwork you’ll capture some of autumn’s transformative essence in your own beautiful, beaded jewelry. The process echoes the journey from inspiration to a tangible work of wearable art.

Put a Wreath on It

Alice Coelho’s Petite Couronne Pendant (above) is made with SuperDuos and fire-polished rounds stitched in right-angle weave. The back of the pendant is made from cylinder beads stitched in circular peyote. When the front and back layers are joined, you get a sweet little wreath—hence the name Petite Couronne (“little wreath” in French). The colors you choose for your little wreath can reflect any season you choose—but I love the idea of fall florals!

Wrap it Up

Amy Haftkowycz’s Melon Delight Wrap Bracelet is an off-loom bracelet that looks like it’s woven on a loom. This is a perfect introductory project for anyone who likes the style, because it doesn’t require a big investment in time or tools. The wrap bracelet is a beginner-friendly pattern that uses a variation of brick stitch to weave beads between two waxed cotton cords. Simply switching out the bead colors will give you a completely different look and feel!

Amy says, “I started beading the way many others did: I walked into a bead store one day and was instantly addicted. There were too many different beads and techniques out there to explore . . . I couldn’t (and still can’t) get enough.” We love Amy’s choices in beads, as well as the beautiful green, bronze, and brown colorway she chose.

Gather the Harvest

Use cubic right-angle weave, herringbone, and peyote stitch to create these open-sided multicolor geometric earrings. You’ll love the sculptural effect! The Boho Basket Earrings will take your beadwork in new dimensions with techniques you’ll want to use again and again.

Designer Cindy Kinerson is an accomplished beadwork artist and the co-owner of Reno Bead Shop and Out West Beads. Her beadwork usually starts with a color palette and then grows from there. She recommends keeping a color journal or a record of color combinations that have worked for you. Cindy is a bead weaver and basket maker whose beaded jewelry often combines geometric elements.

Turn Over a New Leaf Pendant beading pattern by Kim Leahy

Fall Leaves

Use peyote stitch to make dimensional shapes inspired by natural leaves in the Turn Over a New Leaf Pendant. The tiny gold seed beads highlight the edges and give the leaves a little extra pop. Plus, create your own beaded attachments for connecting leather cord to the clasp. The pearls in between each leaf add a little shine and break up the rich fall colors.

Kim Leahy is the owner of Esther Beadwork, which specializes in unique beaded jewelry kits. Kim’s advice to beginners is, “Stick with it. My first project took all summer, and half of that was figuring the stitch out. Also, take classes if you have the opportunity and means. You learn so much that way. Don’t expect to be an expert on day one.”

Mystical Portal Pendant beading pattern by Marianna Zukowsky

Beading Gateway

The Mystical Portal Pendant was one of the most downloaded projects from Interweave.com in the last few years. Use tubular peyote stitch to form the mystical unisex pendant and hang it from your choice of cord, chain, or ribbon. The secret is in the shaping, which is easier than it looks.

Do you remember the first time you visited your local bead shop? Marianna Zukowksy says, “I don’t know what I expected, but I was fascinated and amazed and overwhelmed, all at the same time! Everywhere I looked, walls, shelves, counters, and tables were filled with magnificent selections. I didn’t even realize I had been holding my breath until I finally released it.”
