Beads, Baubles & Jewels: Modern Ingenuity
This season of Beads, Baubles & Jewels is all about learning from the masters. We’d be remiss if we didn’t also take time to feature some modern ingenuity, though. To start, I’ll take a look at beads inspired by Monet as a nod to the past.
• The necklace on the left was given to me by Jean Gribbon, the founder and director of Beads of Courage. It features a beautiful Sonoran desert landscape bead, made by Robert Simmons, and came with a card welcoming my family and me to the Southwest. Moving to the desert required a huge leap of faith and Jean knows the power of beads to convey courage and strength.
• The necklaces in the center are from the beading project pages at Beadshop.com. Like successful paintings, both designs provide plenty of places for the eye to rest. With the blue necklace, the spaces between beads are the punctuation. With the pink necklace, the brown beads provide a pause between notes.
• The water lily-inspired beads are from Julie Nordine. The combination of matte and shiny is unusual and will provide a good jumping-off point for the jewelry design. I’ll also draw inspiration from the colors when I get ready to put a necklace together.
• The necklace on the right is another one of my favorites. The beads are from DakotaStones.com. I like multicolor strands because the color planning is done for you and the resulting creations are super versatile. This mixed color strand is no longer available, but DS carries some gorgeous stone collars that are similarly dramatic.
Aja Vaz brings us into current times and shows off some current techniques. Using a glass lampworking torch, Aja shares how she makes her amazing and very organic glass beads.
Tammy Honaman brings a long-standing technique into more current times by weaving beads on a loom the traditional way then adding her own flair with fringe and edging techniques. Check out those sequins!
Thanks for joining us. Tune in next week to see what’s in store for you.
