Beads, Baubles & Jewels: Inspired by Clay

Episode 2 of Beads, Baubles & Jewels showcases clay and its many art forms. Host Katie Hacker kicks things off highlighting clay beads. Seen here are clay components made by Andrew Thornton.

Syndee Holt, polymer artist extraordinaire, shares how to create a set of 4 companion pieces in the style of modern art — using bold graphics. She walks you through her creative process. Start with a basic idea, create a practice piece then expand that to be more of your own style. As an example, here is Syndee’s first finished design in the technique she demonstrates on Beads, Baubles & Jewels — as she describes it “simple strips.”

Here is the evolution of the design and what Syndee walks you through in her “4 Sisters” segment.

Polymer is a very versatile medium and you can take it in many directions. If it’s a new medium for you, Tammy Jones shares some basics in 5 Techniques for Making Polymer Clay Jewelry to help get you on your way.

The other guest in this episode is Allie Buchman from Potomac Beads. Allie demonstrates bead weaving using various shaped beads in different designs. Shapes beads are so popular the hardest part is figuring out which beads to add to your bead stash and then deciding which design to create. The Handy 2-Hole Shaped Beads Guide is a primer on shaped beads designed to help give you an idea about these little gems.
