Making a beaded sculpture allows you to unleash your creativity and create a one-of-a-kind work of beaded art. One of the inspiring things about making handmade beaded sculptures is that there are no limits to what you can create. Once you have your materials, you can begin designing your sculpture by sketching out your ideas and experimenting with different bead combinations.

To inspire your next beaded sculpture, we asked three award-winning designers to share their advice.

Tell a Story

Katsue Huang says, “My beaded sculptures are inspired by mythology and folktales from all over the world. Since I studied history of architecture in university, I started to observe how ancient people depicted imaginary and real animals. The images I learned from architectural art are a big influence on my creative activity.”

For her Hippocampus beaded sculpture, Katsue gave life to the mythological creature with the upper body of a horse and the lower body of the fish. She studied the skeletal systems of horses and fish and took great pains to understand their structure and anatomy from every perspective (front, back, side, top).

Make It Your Own

Corbett Kesler places 18,000 to 65,000 beads by hand on each of his beaded sculptures. He says, “I started my art journey with a blank skull, a handful of beads, and YouTube. I had to struggle and figure the process out on my own. There are no real how-to videos out there, so trial-and-error was my friend.” His process has evolved, which keeps things interesting.

Corbett suggests, “The real key to making art is to find your own style and then make it your own. Don’t be afraid to evolve and try new things.” He enters competitions to get exposure for his art and business.

Kickstart Your Creativity

Sue Neel loves creating beaded sculptures because there are no rules. She advises, “Concept is the easy part; the difficulty is the construction. Sculptures are a way to get through a creative slump.” She recommends looking around your house and studio with fresh eyes, using common household items as armatures, and considering craft items not normally associated with beadwork to build your vision.

Sue recommends keeping an open mind while building beaded sculptures, since their construction frequently requires multiple attempts and re-starts. Sue says, “The sculpture I am working on now has been a real challenge that I have restarted several times. It is frustrating, but it also makes me think outside the box.”

Tips from Beaded Sculpture Artists

1

Find your inspiration and the story you want to tell. Research details that will make your sculpture stand out.

2

Sketch your design so you can plan your basic structure or create small samples that will allow you to make a plan.

3

Use different shapes of beads to create different textures on the surface, such as Gingko beads and Super Duos for scales.

4

Building a sculpture is frustrating at times—take breaks and persevere. The process is a great way to kickstart your creativity.

5

Experiment with different techniques to make your creation shine.

Share Your Beaded Sculptures

Handmade beaded sculptures are beautiful and intricate pieces of art that require patience, skill, and creativity. Each sculpture is a unique masterpiece that tells a story through the combination of colors, shapes, and textures. Creating a beaded sculpture involves a meticulous process of connecting story, beads, and techniques.
