Ruby colored beaded necklace with two layers
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

I love giving people sentimental gifts. These kinds of gifts show that you’re thinking of the person and if they’re handmade, that you spent the time selecting bits and pieces for it. They’re one of a kind and can also be fun to make. If any of your friends are July babies, think of making them a trendy beaded layered necklace featuring the color of their birthstone: ruby.

I made a ruby-hued beaded necklace with two layers and some fun accent beads, and it did not take too long to actually make.

The longest part of crafting a layered necklace is planning it. I drew out several sketches of designs that I had in mind, but it wasn’t until I found heart accent beads that I knew what I wanted to do. I decided to keep the rest of the necklace simple, axing the plan for a third layer.

Making a Layered Beaded Necklace

Supplies

Oval link chain

Lobster clasp in chain color

Crimp beads

Crimp bead covers

Jump rings

Ruby colored beads: size 6 and 11 seed beads, 6mm red glass round beads

Accent beads of your choice – I used 10mm grey shall heart beads

Bead stringing wire – I used Beadalon’s 7 strand wire in the silver color

Pliers: flat nose and round

Wire cutters

Measuring ribbon

Once everything was in my possession, I measured two of my favorite necklaces to layer and used their measurements as my guide. The shorter layer of beads is 10 inches and the longer one is 13 inches. I also measured 3.5 inches of chain for each side of the necklace.

I had to use alligator clips to ensure that the beads stayed in place while I strung them. As far as placing the beads, I strung them randomly. I wanted the necklace to not seem too planned out, but casual. Once the beads were on both strings, I placed another bead on both strings to join them. The crimp bead cover and crimp bead were placed right above and secured.

Final Necklace!

I made sure each chain was of equal length, then attached them to the crimp bead cover loop and added the jump rings before finishing it off with a matching lobster clasp. Then, the necklace is ready to wear!
