There are so many ways to store our beads and supplies—from the containers that materials are sold in, to those we recycle or reuse, to those we purchase. Organizing and containers are fun topics that never get old! Seed beads require their own storage solutions, from using their original packaging to finding new containers to organize and display them.

Finding the Right Containers

In general, some will say a seed bead is a seed bead is a seed bead. This is not the case especially when it comes to how we manage them. For me, the story goes like this: After I fell hard for seed beads, it became clear that I would need to organize my collection of colors, shapes, and sizes and find a way to leverage their beauty. The colors alone are worthy of making them part of a room’s décor.

Seed beads are sold in a wide variety of tubes.

When first entering the seed bead world, I saved the empty test tube-shaped containers that seed beads are sold in. Since some beads are sold in bags or hanks, the empty tubes are the perfect vessels for pouring new beads into. This is a great way to recycle, and the transparent test tubes make it easy to see the beads.

Be Flexible

As I collected more and more seed beads, I had a hard time with the tubes not all being the same. So, I went on a shopping spree and purchased a lot of the same size empty tubes for seed bead storage. Unfortunately, no matter how much I wanted all the tubes to be the same, I realized that my seed beads were never going to be the same amounts. I had to accept that I will always have tubes of different sizes, that the tops will not be identical, and it is okay.

Repurpose Household Items

Eventually, I wanted to display the tubes rather than stash them in storage boxes. I love seeing all the colors and textures—those tiny beads can sing! There are many tube options available, such as those used in bead stores. But for me, test tube (or lipstick) racks work beautifully. I’ve even purchased shelving to suit the racks, so the beads can be on display and provide daily doses of inspiration.

Recycle Storage Containers

Of course, I have run out of space in the storage racks and on the shelves, and I’ve also purchased volumes of beads that go well beyond a single tube. More problems equal more solutions, and more containers! Of course, there are many recycled household containers that work well for seeds bead storage. Gelato jars are my favorite because they are are clear, have a nice shape with secure lids, and it is a sweet task to create more empty containers when your seed bead collection grows.

Labeled seed bead tubes
Labels make life easier!

Label It

Organizing would not be complete without labels. I rely heavily on my label maker when I can’t salvage the labels from the manufacturer or distributor. Each bead has its own code. A code that equals size, color, finish. A code that helps you be able to reorder, share with your friends when they fall in love with the same color, share in your instructions if you teach, etc. If you transfer beads from their original packaging, you must retain the codes or relevant info. Save yourself some stress and label your containers in a way that works best for you.
