Tom Knisely
Overshot rug. Equipment: 4-shaft loom, 27" weaving width; 12-dent reed; 1 boat shuttle, 1 ski shuttle. Warp: 8/4 cotton/poly rug warp (50% cotton, 50% polyester, 1,600 yd/lb), used doubled, taupe, 1,585 yd (1 lb). Tabby weft: 8/4 cotton/poly rug warp (1,600 yd/lb), taupe, 365 yd. Pattern weft: 3-ply rug wool (720 yd/lb), used doubled, Midnight Blue, 652 yd. 8/4 cotton-poly rug warp and 3-ply Rugby wool are available from The Mannings.

Equipment: 4-shaft loom, 7" weaving width; 12-dent reed; 2 shuttles.
Warp: 10/2 pearl cotton (4,200 yd/lb), melon, 605 yd.
Tabby weft: 10/2 pearl cotton (4,200 yd/lb), melon, 260 yd.
Pattern weft: 2-ply wool with Angelina (2,400 yd/lb), Amethyst, 139 yd.
10/2 pearl cotton is available from most weaving retailers. Lace-weight Moonbeam yarn (2-ply wool with Angelina) is available from Alpine Meadow in 300 yd skeins.

Overshot bookmarks.
Equipment: 4-shaft loom, 2" weaving width; 12-dent reed; 2 shuttles.
Warp: 140/2 silk (35,000 yd/lb), Navy, 387 yd.
Tabby weft: 140/2 silk (35,000 yd/lb), Navy or bottle green, 24 yd/bookmark; 216 yd for nine bookmarks.
Pattern weft for each bookmark, 23 yd. 60/2 silk (14,880 yd/lb), white and handdyed; Alec Jackson’s Premium Silk Floss, tangerine #30; Sulky Holoshimmer machine embroidery thread (59% polyester, 40% polyethylene, 1% metallic).
140/2 silk is available from Lunatic Fringe; 60/2 silk from Webs (handdyed), Sulky machine embroidery thread from fabric stores, Alec Jackson’s Premium Japanese Silk Floss from fly-fishing stores and the Web.

Pattern weft: 5/2 pearl cotton (2,100 yd/lb) or other smooth, strong yarn, 270 yd.
Dye equipment and supplies: small plastic cups; measuring cups and spoons or metric scale; rubber gloves; 2 small, stiff stencil brushes; plastic drop cloth or lengths of plastic; 4 qt stainless steel or enamel pot; stove or hot plate; fiber reactive dyes (Procion MX or Cibacron F), 2 oz each color; sodium alginate or dye thickener; soda ash or dye activator; urea; Synthrapol or liquid dish detergent.
All yarns are available from most weaving retailers. Dye supplies are available from Earth Guild or PRO Chemical & Dye.
