A Few of My Favorite Things
Projects
Cork Mat – Protecting the table from hot pots, this project uses cork sheeting, a by-product of the bottle-stopper industry, made of waste bits that are ground up and formed into sheets with adhesive.
Hearth Rug – For this rug, wide strips of carpet runner were woven in a simple over-under pattern and secured with twining in red and black cord.
Woven Paper Cards – One can bring a touch of personal creativity to these ready-made note cards by adding woven patterns and motifs.
Lantern Lamp – For this pleasingly simple lantern lamp, woven paper is rolled into a tube and lit with a tubular bulb.
Plaited Paper Basket – Grocery bags make a plaited basket that is both attractive and surprisingly sturdy.
Waves Window Hangings – This window hanging softens a view but still lets the light in. The base is heavy plastic sheeting cut into strips through which organdy ribbon has been woven.
Sticks and String Coaster – This hefty and sturdy coaster sits still on a table and is made with a simple two-loop technique.
Tile Wrap – Wrap the tile in one direction and weave across it to make an attractive wall accent—an excellent way to recycle leftover tiles.
9-Strand Necklace With Beads – Threads and beads combine to make this elegant necklace fit for an evening out on the town.
Spring and String Choker – Even simple string can make a handsome accessory, as this choker illustrates.
Braided Rope Mats – These 2 simple mats are woven from cotton-synthetic clothesline and require only a needle and thread for binding and securing the ends.
Canvas Strip Pillow – For this pillow, undyed cotton canvas is cut into strips, woven over a polyester pillow form, and embellished with vintage beads.
Pocket Purse – Two rectangles are loosely woven on a simple frame loom, machine-washed to shrink and felt them, hand-sewn together, and finished with a crocheted handle and loop trim.
Egg Hat – For this project, two colors are alternated in the warp and crossed with a single weft color. The resulting fabric has subtle dots.
Pile Patch – Weft-faced rug techniques are used to make this monogram patch. Woven on a small frame loom, this project can be taken along on vacation or in the soccer carpool.
Fuzzy Collar – Making this Fuzzy Collar is so simple it’s like child’s play, using a weaving technique usually practiced by school children.
