Mirage Hat Crochet Pattern

Trick the eye with the Mirage Hat. The pattern appears to be vertical lines when looked at straight-on; viewed aslant, it appears to have horizontal lines. The designer created this crochet illusions technique that all knitters can pick up and add some mystery to their projects. This hat pairs well with the Mirage Scarf Pattern.
Finished Size: circumference 19"
Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Worsted (100% pure new wool; 210 yd [192 m]/3½ oz [100 g]; ): #00231 chestnut brown (A), 1 skein; # 77201 aquarium (B), #77223 lemongrass (C), 1 skein each.
Hook: Size I/9 (5.5 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn needle; two ¾ " shank buttons (optional, decorative only).
Gauge: 14 sts and 11 stripes (22 rows) = 4" in patt.
