Anyone who has visited Continental Europe can tell you that the daily trip to the market is as natural as breathing. Vicki selected linen, wetspun from fine long line flax, for strength, and tested the durability of this market bag with a few canned goods, some oranges, and a bunch of bananas. Your shoulder may wear out before the bag does!

Finished Size: 14” (35.5 cm) × 14” (35.5 cm). Strap length: 36” (91.5 cm).

Yarn: Louet Euroflax (100% linen, 4 ply, 279 yd [255 m]/100 g skein). #35 mustard, 2 skeins.

Needles: Size 11 (8 mm)—knotted mesh stitch. Size 6 (4 mm)—basketweave stitch. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Tapestry needle.

Gauge: 16 sts and 7 rows = 3” (7.5 cm), size 6 (4 mm) needles—basketweave stitch. 16 sts and 18 rows = 6” (15 cm), size 11 (8 mm) needles—knotted mesh stitch.

Skill level: Intermediate.

  1. Hi, I was trying to knit this bag starting today and I couldn’t get past the stitch that is described like this. Slip the needle through the back of the 1st st, knit the 2nd st through the back loop, knit the 1st, slip both stitches made off the needle. The part that remains unclear is knitting the second st through the back loop…does this mean that the yarn that is hooked and pulled through the back of the 2nd stitch is also pulled through the back of the 1st st. then k the 1st st.?
when I dropped the 2 stitches made, a loop is formed that hangs down under the right ndl. Is this normal? Do you have a video tutorial or a picture tutorial? I really want to knit this tote bag and would so appreciate any help that you can give me?
