  Orenburg Knitting: Knitting Gossamer Webs
Video Download with Galina Khmeleva

The handknitted shawls of Orenburg, located in the steppes of the southern Ural Mountains, set a world standard for delicate lace patterning. These “gossamer webs” are created from a series of basic elements and patterns handed down from generation to generation. In this video, Galina Khmeleva shares with you her decades of experience working with the knitters of Orenburg.

Experience this rich tradition as Galina Khmeleva shares with you the history, the stories, the patterns, and the knitting techniques of these talented craftspeople, so that you can create your own gossamer webs.

Snowflake Lace: An-Elements-of-Orenburg Scarf Knitting Pattern
Pattern designed by Inna Voltchkova

This scarf incorporates eight different snowflakes by using ten basic elements of Orenburg lace and embellished it with Russian-style border teeth. Because the scarf is worked in garter stitch, there is no wrong side.

Classic Gossamer Triangular Shawl Knitting Pattern
Pattern designed by Inna Voltchkova

The allover design for this shawl uses four of the ten basic Orenburg elements: Peas are used for a grid of diamonds, Honeycomb for a flower, Beaded Way and Diagonal decorate the center diamonds, and the "snakes" from the Diagonals create the teeth. The teeth for the left edging are knitted first, then the body of the shawl and the right row of teeth are knitted at the same time; the diagonal edging at the top of shawl is knitted last.
