Itajime is a form of shibori dyeing that uses clamped shapes to create a resist. Traditional itajime dyeing was accomplished with wooden blocks tied to the cloth with string. Now, the shapes are made from Plexiglas and held in place with C-clamps (available at your local hardware store). The shapes prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric, creating distinctive patterns on cloth.
