Learn more about what’s in each issue:

  • January/February 2014: Celebrate silk in all its forms: its rich history in worldwide weaving traditions, its shine and drape, its warmth and strength, and its many uses, from luxury garments to silk rugs. We’ll look at different varieties and preparations of silk available to weavers.
  • March/April 2014: Do you analyze the upholstery around you in a waiting room, planning your next weaving project. Do you walk up to strangers on the street and ask for a closer look at their clothes? Do you have a hand-medown textile that you want to recreate? This issue explores the weaver’s favorite source of inspiration: other weaving.
  • May/June 2014: For Handwoven’s 35th anniversary, we celebrate creativity. If designing is your favorite part of weaving, why not make the fun last? Colors, textures, treadling, and even tie-up can all be changed during weaving, allowing endless design freedom and the opportunity to produce a plethora of pieces on a single warp. We’ll look at weave structures that lend themselves to designing at the loom, and get some tips from production weavers on weaving variations on a warp. We’ll also look at highlights from the last 35 years of Handwoven.
  • September/October 2014: The 2014 annual reader challenge is all about the comforts of home: from floor to ceiling, bedroom to kitchen and bath, from décor to everyday fabrics. We’ll share bright ideas for rugs and runners, towels and throws, coverlets, aprons, and more.
  • November/December 2014: Plain weave is the workhorse of the cloth world, but it can also be a star. Plain weave alone can be simply elegant or it can be a canvas for fabulous color and design. As ground cloth, it is the foundation for spectacular overshot, inlay, warp-faced and weft-faced designs, and in doubleweave, it can create fantastic shapes and patterns.
