In 1995, Interweave Press established a scholarship program to encourage spinners to spread their craft to the larger community. This program is funded by generous donations from SOAR participants. The funds are used to provide scholarships for individuals to attend SOAR.

In order to receive a SOAR scholarship you must demonstrate that you are actively involved in learning an aspect of spinning and sharing your knowledge with the larger community. Your involvement may include fields related to handspinning, such as dyeing, knitting, weaving, fiber preparation, and the like. You don't have to be enrolled in a formal training course or a degree program.

There are two kinds of SOAR scholarships: full and assistance. Our full scholarship covers the fees for Workshop and Retreat, lodging, and meals. The assistance scholarship covers only the fee for either the Workshop only or the Retreat only. The brochure describing sessions at the 2007 SOAR will be available in March.

Especially for Teachers
In 2005 we announced the addition of a new scholarship. Knitting and crochet have gained enormous popularity over the past few years. We believe that there are many knitters and crocheters who are eager to learn to spin. To encourage the growth of spinning in the knitting and crochet communities, this scholarship will provide basic spinning instruction to a knitting or crochet teacher who is active in these communities. SOAR is accepting scholarship applications for a knitting or crochet instructor to attend a beginning spinning workshop at SOAR. Shop owners, guild members, and educators-at-large are encouraged to apply. This scholarship can be either a full or assistance scholarship depending on the applicant.

To Apply
All materials must be received (not postmarked) by April 18, 2007.
Only complete applications will be considered.

Please submit the following:

  • SOAR Scholarship Worksheet.
  • Complete contact information.
  • A personal essay (see below for details).
  • A completed SOAR registration form.
  • Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your abilities and interests, such as guild members, fellow enthusiasts, or other students. The recommendation letters may be sent separately, but they must also arrive by April 18.

The Process
We will notify you of our decision by May 30, and we will update you on pertinent SOAR information, including registration for lodging. If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be asked to provide a report to Interweave Press by July 1 of the year following your award, outlining how the scholarship helped you work toward your spinning goals and what you are doing or plan to do to share the knowledge you gained at SOAR. We love to see snapshots, yarn samples, and other indications of your progress. We may draw on information in your report for a future Spin-Off article or post a summary on our website. As a scholarship recipient at SOAR you will have the opportunity to meet other attendees by volunteering at the registration table and speak to the group briefly at a general session and explain what your post-SOAR goals are.

Essay Requirements
Please write an essay, no longer than two pages, covering the following points: Briefly describe your level of involvement in spinning and related craft. How do you intend to use the knowledge you gain by attending SOAR? How will you share spread the craft to the larger community? If you are applying for the teacher’s scholarship please explain your experience with the knitting or crochet community and how you will use the knowledge gained during SOAR to reach potential spinners. Include in your essay anything else you feel is important for the reviewers to know.

Send your completed application materials to:
