Blues Garden
Artist Statement
The enclosed photographs are of a needlework
piece that I designed in the fall of 1997 and spring of 1998.
It is entitled Blues Garden and is stitched on Zweigart
fabric - Melrose, antique white 28 count. I designed this piece
because I wanted to try a variety of new stitches in addition
to cross-stitch, use some of my favorite colors (blues and purples),
and to design little gardens that would brighten my house. The
idea for the gardens came from seeing formal historical gardens
that had been fashioned into cross-stitch pieces. This piece
consists of 9 small garden plots and uses the following stitches:
cross stitch, oblique filling stitch, star stitch, mosaic filing
stitch, fern stitch, smyrna cross, wheatear stitch, leviathan
stitch, picot stitch, eyelet stitch, zig zag stitch, backstitch,
algerian eye stitch, satin stitch, and tete-de boeuf stitch.
