Family Maze
Artist Statement
The design was created in August 1999, stitched
over the fall and completed in November 1999. The pillow was
finished in January 2000. This original design has two historical
elements. First, it is a traditional maze, conceived after research
on ancient and medieval labyrinths. One path takes you from
the entrance to the center. To enter, hold the pillow so that
the bars in the center rectangle are horizontal. The entrance
will be at the right edge. Second, the names of all four family
members are hidden in the maze design. Scott and Drew are the
two sons of Betsy and Jeff.
BETSY is in the upper right quadrant.
SCOTT is in the lower right; DREW in
the lower left; and, JEFF in the upper left. The
letters are stylized and may be in either the blue or silver-green.
In keeping with the historical design, the labyrinth path travels
through each of the elements of the designthe namesand
ends in the center. Two threads are usedWatercolours®
Sage and Blueberry. A Scotch stitch is used throughout.
