scarf style contest
at the 2005 Knit-Out and Crochets

The St. Louis Knit-Out and Crochet

We’ve known all along how great the fiber arts are. We gather at local yarn shops, spending HOURS looking and touching . . .and dreaming. We meet at coffeshops around the world to talk and knit and crochet and share. We spend endless hours on the internet checking out the latest patterns, latest fashions, latest friends to join the knitting blogs . . . And look, the needlearts love is catching on. Our world is growing, one city at a time.

Interweave Press sponsored Scarf Style contests at Knit-Out and Crochet events throughout the U.S. What a great turn-out the contests had! Beautiful, unique, fluffy, funky, short, long, knit, crochet, tied in knots, you name it – we had a scarf entered in almost every category possible. There were great prizes for the winners and all the scarves were donated to charities.

We’d love to share the winners with you . . .

Grand Prize Winner: Sarah Chilson from Maryland

The Scarf: The Luck Dragon Scarf made from Lambs Pride Worsted and Crystal Palace’s squiggle yarn.

About the Winner: Sarah was recently living in Japan as a nanny. Every week she took the little boy and girl to music lessons, she’d knit at a near-by yarn shop. Dragons are very much a part of the Japanese and Chinese cultures, and Sarah enjoyed teaching the children about many of the dragons. The Luck Dragon is taken from Chinese culture. Questions about the pattern may be directed to Sarah's blog: redthreadsblog.blogspot.com

Now Sarah is back in the states working fro Celtic Knot Yarn Shop in Ellicott City, MD, teaching others the joy of knitting. When she heard about the Washington D.C. Scarf Style contest, with all entries being donated to the Orphans Foundation and the Food & Friends charities, she felt that the recipient from either charity could use a little luck.

From left to right: Contest Judge Nicky Epstein, Grand Prize Winner Sarah Chilson, and Contest Judge Binnie Fry.

About the Judging: When Nicky Epstein and Binnie Fry, the judges for the Washington D.C. Scarf Style contest, saw the Luck Dragon scarf, they knew they had a winner. But deciding on the other prize winners? That was no easy task. All the winner were unique in some way, including a take off of Nicky’s own Faux Fur scarf design, a knitted wedding ring design, a crocheted garden of yellow flowers, red and green holiday loops, a knitted and woven design and a knitted green leaf textured scarf.
