Profiles + Projects From Knitting’s New Wave

By Sabrina Gschwandtner
Read by Sabrina Gschwandtner

“I’m really passionate and interested in this idea of what it means to take hand craft and to put it into a contemporary art context,” says Sabrina Gschwandtner. KnitKnit tells the stories of twenty-six men and women (and one group!) in the forefront of contemporary knitting: Lisa Anne Auerbach, Anna Bell, Isabel Berglund, Risto Bimbiloski, Wenlan Chia, Dave Cole, Liz Collins, Jim Drain, Teva Durham, Norah Gaughan, David Gentzsch, Aimee Hagerty Johnson, Joelle Hoverson, Erika Knight, Knitta, Catherine Lowe, Bridget Marrin, Tina Marrin, Rachel Matthews, Cat Mazza, Mandy McIntosh, Althea Merback, Annie Modesitt, Debbie New, Eugene Ong, Freddie Robbins and Beryl Tsang.

About the author:
Sabrina Gschwandtner
is a New York City based artist who works with film, video, photography, performance, sewing, crochet and knitting. She has a BA from Brown University, and an MFA from Bard College. She has curated numerous exhibitions including: "The Handmade Goes Digital," at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, and "the Workmanship of Risk," at St. Lawrence University. Sabrina's writing has appeared in Rowan, Interweave Knits, Fiberarts and Cabinet magazines.
