|Owlivia and little Livvy, from the Summer 2011 issue of Interweave Crochet. Owlivia stands 4 1/2 inches tall and LIttle Livvie stands 2 inches tall. Cute, cute, cute!
|Here's my progress on Owlivia. I'm in the first row of the body; head done. This took me about 20 minutes!|
I am one of those knitters who enjoys crocheting.
One of my favorite types of crochet is called "amigurimi," which is the Japanese art of making little animals or anthropomorphic objects. Although there are amigurimi projects written for knitting, I've seen most of them written as crochet patterns.
The Summer 2011 issue of Interweave Crochet includes Brenda B.K. Anderson's Owlivia and Livvy, darling little amigurimi owls that I must make!
Owlivia and little Livvy are so cute; I pulled yarn from my stash to make them. My local yarn shop sells the little eyes, which I think really make these owl dolls come alive.
Owlivia is made with worsted weight, and I just happen to have a mystery ball of brown yarn in my stash, and some orange and tan left-overs, too. Excuse me, I'm going to go cast on for Owlivia!
A half-hour later . . .
Okay, I'm back. See the photo at left? It took me just 20 minutes! (The extra 10 minutes is what it took me to find a size G hook and make some iced tea.) The whole head is done and I'm on my first round of the body. This is so easy and fun—if you know how to do the single crochet stitch, you can do it!
You can have even more fun with color choices—how about a hot pink Owlivia? Just dive into your stash and see what you come up with. If you have a chunky yarn, you can make Owlivia bigger! You'll want to make a whole parliament of owls! (A "parliament" is a group of owls!)
|The Fiddlehead Basket from the Summer 2011 issue of Interweave Crochet|
There is really a ton of fun summer stuff in the Summer issue of Interweave Crochet; one of my other favorites is another Brenda B.K. Anderson design: the Fiddlehead Basket. I just love the two-tone design—what a wonderfully unique market basket!
P.S. Crochetme.com is hosting a crochet-along for Owlivia! Check it out and join in.
