Downton Abbey Is Back!

Did you watch Downton Abbey last night? I did! I'm so glad to immerse myself in the world of the Gilded Age again, with my Lord and Lady TV friends.

The Half-Day Off Mitts by Sara Lamb

I'm so looking forward to seeing what will happen to to Lady Mary, and Lady Edith, too, with her married love interest.

I secretly hope that Tom and Mary end up together. Is that too far-fetched?

Last year I knitted a cowl during Downton, and this year I'm finishing a sweater that I started this fall.

If you're in need of a Downton knit-along, we have the perfect thing for you: A knit kit—the Half-Day Off Mitts from The Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits!

Designer Sara Lamb designed these knit fingerless gloves to protect the wearer's hands from sun, wind, soil, and cold. The mitts protect the hands like gloves, yet allow fingers the ability to function: fingers are free to pick up a hymnal or a tea cup, or use a knife and fork when having a meal out.

According to Sara, on their half-days off, their Sunday outing to church, or home to visit family, the work-hardened hands of female servants who work "downstairs" could be covered with soft mitts.

My favorite thing about the Half-Day Mitts is the picot detail. It adds the perfect flapper touch!

You begin the mitts by casting on using a provisional cast on (this is my favorite method). Here are the details of the picot hem and cuff:

Hem
Using a provisional method, CO 48 sts. Pm and join to k in the rnd.
K 7 rnds even.
Picot Turning Rnd: *K2 tog, yo; rep from * to end.
K 7 rnds even.
Remove waste yarn from CO and place 48 sts onto spare needle. Fold hem to WS with purl sides tog. Hold needles parallel with working needle in front and spare needle with CO sts in back.
Joining Rnd: *K 1 st from front needle tog with 1 st from back needle; rep from * to end.

Cuff
K 1 rnd even.
Next Rnd: *K2tog, yo; rep from * to end.
K 4 rnds even.

The joining round may seem like it's awkward to knit, but it's really quite easy. Just go slow and be sure to catch both stitches as you work each knit stitch. It's very much like working a three-needle bind-off.

Ready to start? Get your Half-Day Off Mitt Kit now, and in no time you'll be knitting these mitts while enjoying Downton Abbey!

Cheers,
